“The person who makes a success of living is the one who see his goal steadily and aims for it unswervingly. That is dedication.” -Cecil B. DeMille

If you’ve ever worked with a life coach, project manager, or anyone else involved in taking an idea from inception to implementation then you’ll recognize the need to set goals. A goal is simply a line in the sand that helps us recognize when we’ve achieved something. Goals can be big (“launch a new website”) or small (“write my new moon blog post”) but in either case they setup some future state that we can begin to move towards.

The axiom “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak,” is an apt description of the sign of Sagittarius. This sign is a dual, or double-bodied, sign. The centaur is half horse and half man. The lower half is a symbol for the animal side of our nature – those base desires and ignoble actions we share with all living things. The upper half is a symbol for the rational mind and our ability to rise above our desires in order to seek understanding, wisdom, and a sense of the divine.

Sagittarius is called “the archer” and its astrological symbol can remind of of its desire to “aim high.” To aim means that we have our sights set on a target. Therefore, what are you aiming for this month?

The Astrology of the New Moon

November New Moon

The new moon occurs on November 25, 2011 at 1:10 A.M. at 2° Sagittarius 37′. This is an extra special new moon as it is also a solar eclipse. This means the earth, moon, and sun are more or less in alignment. A new moon eclipse is a powerful time when the intentions we set, the goals we commit to, and the targets we aim for have a much greater chance of coming to fruition.

The new moon in Sadge makes two important aspects. First, it makes a trine aspect to the planet Uranus in Aries. Both Sagittarius and Aries are fire signs. Fire is a symbol for intuition. Now, you may think of the water signs as being “intuitive,” but that’s not the case. Fire signs are intuitive in that they are always looking forward and making decisions based on what could be rather than what is in front of them. They get their information not from their senses (i.e. “what do I see in front of me?”) but rather from their capacity to make connections and see the bigger picture (e.g. “what could be…”).

Therefore the new moon in aspect to Uranus will awaken us to what the future possibilities can be. Sounds a lot like the beginning of goal setting to me Uranus always carries the sense of the “new” or the iconoclastic. This is a wonderful time of initiating new goals that, perhaps just a few weeks ago, you might have thought them to be too outlandish. Surprise yourself.

The new moon also makes a square aspect to the planet Mars in Virgo. Virgo is ruled by the planet Mercury and during this eclipse Mercury will be retrograde (this Mercury retrograde period lasts from November 24 – December 14; for more information on what Mercury retrograde mean, see this blog post). The struggle (square) between Virgo and Sagittarius is one between being caught up in service to the details and one for freedom and higher vision- the bigger picture. Don’t let your efforts to work the minutiae blind you from seeing the bigger picture.

When Mercury retrogrades back to 3° Sagittarius on December 14 we can then start to work the plan, put the details into place, and execute our strategy. Until that time keep your plans at the 10,000 foot level. Make 5, 3, and 1 year plans now. This powerful eclipse has the power to fuel even our most important endeavors.

With that in mind here are some questions to ask yourself at this new moon:

What is the bigger vision for my life?

What dreams would I like to make into reality?

What has my experience taught me? Where am I wise?

If I know what’s best for me am I willing to act on it?

How can my dreams and goals create more security for me?

If you’d like more information about how this eclipse may affect you personally then please contact me for a reading. If you were born in the early days of Sagittarius, Gemini, Pisces, or Virgo then this new moon may affect you more acutely.

Namasté

Last weekend I was in Provincetown and participated in a fundraiser for the local animal shelter. I met a lot of local dog people there and really enjoyed their company. Today I talked to a new contact about contract tech work. And this coming weekend I’m attending two local meetup groups (both of which I started). I’m not chatting up my social calendar as much as I’m realizing how important these kinds of interactions are for me. It’s become clearer to me how much I need to continually stretch my social cirlces (which can be a challenge for this double Pisces!).

In those instances it was quite easy for me to do that since those are people who are interested in the same things as I am (dogs, tech work, and astrology). But what about the people I don’t normally spend time with? What social networks (both physical and virtual) am I missing out on just because I don’t want to upset the equilibrium? Mine or theirs. When’s the last time I had dinner with a Republican? (okay, it was in July with my parents). This month, how can I make a new ally? Can I form a partnership outside of my usual circle that is mutually beneficial?

The Astrology of the New Moon

Chart for the Libra New Moon

The new moon occurs on September 27, 2011 at 7:09 AM EDT at 4° Libra. The new moon is the beginning of a new monthly cycle and the position of the new moon shows us where to focus our efforts in order to make the most of our energy. The sign of Libra is about brining cohesion, cooperation, and counterbalance to situations in order for two opposing energies to work together in harmony. Libra actively seeks out connections through social interactions in order to gain a clearer picture of the self.

There are five planets in Libra right now (including the sun and moon) and the emphasis is on how we relate. How do we relate to other people? Do we look for differences or do we discover commonalities? Can we cooperate? This month we need to put most of our efforts into bridging gaps, finding common ground, and building allies.

The new moon is opposed by Uranus in Aries- the rouge. We may come up against people who seem totally antithetical to to us. In those moments let us remember that’s exactly who we’re meant to meet. And it’s then we can choose to create harmony over disharmony.

In this moment in time our country seems more polarized than ever. And until each one of us individually chooses peace we’ll never find it in the people “out there.”

During this new moon Venus, the planet in charge of Libra, is in her own sign and close to the planet Saturn. This duo is also “unaspected” meaning it doesn’t make a connection to anything else in the chart. With no connection to the rest of the chart it’s free to act – uninhibited by the other planetary energies. It’s as if it were saying, “regardless of what’s happening out there you can hold on to your ability to be kind, courteous, and fair.” Let’s hope that’s the case for all of us.

If you’d like to learn how this new moon interacts with your own chart look for the house that contains 4° of Libra. This new moon is occuring in my tenth house of career, reputation, and public action. It may be a good month for me to look for new partners in business; or increase my reputation through an association with a person or company. It also speaks to my need to create a professional network that’s made of up a variety of people- not only those I typically associate with.

If you’d like to explore your chart more you can print a copy here. I’m also available for astrology readings by phone.

“In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.” -Dwight D. Eisenhower

Now that I’ve been working on three businesses (astrology, technology, and our new all natural pet shampoo) I’ve found it harder and harder to juggle all the pieces that need to come together at any given time for any given project. Last month I picked up my trusty copy of “Getting Things Done,” the bible of productivity written by David Allen.

David lays out a simple, yet comprehensive system for dealing with all the “inputs” we have in our life and all the projects we’re responsible for. It’s a wonderful way to get your arms around all the loose ends that, for me at least, seem to pile up in my email inbox, on my desk, and in endless tablets of to-do items and notes.

Now that I’ve re-read the book and have implemented more of his methodology I feel better organized and able to keep the forward momentum instead of feeling disoriented by all the things I could be doing at any given moment. Getting Things Done coupled with astrology makes the daily choices even easier. For example, with the moon void of course today I found it a great time to finish up a few writing projects (like this newsletter) instead of starting anything new.

The Virgo new moon offers us a similar lesson this month where the keyword “manifestation” implies that we’re prepared, skilled, and ready to tackle whatever may come our way in order to realize our goals.

The Astrology of the New Moon

The new moon occurs on August 28, 2011 at 11:04 PM EDT at 5° of Virgo (Chart of the Virgo New Moon). The sign of Virgo is an earth sign and is about being useful and exhibits conscientious, efficient, and discriminating traits. Virgo follows the sign of Leo, the creative and talented fire sign. This makes Virgo concenred with fine-tuning skills, developing routines, and deriving practical value from those creative, dramatic, and colorful urges expressed in Leo.

Virgo is also associated with health, for its the efficient and smooth operation of the body that reflects optimal health. Virgo wants to minimize chaos, illness, and waste. In doing so it often comes across as serious, pious, or even distracted. The successful harvest of summer’s bounty weighs on the pliable shoulders of this autumn constellation; there is little room for error else the cold winter will take its toll. Thus the skills of planning, organizing, and rationing come easily to this sign.

This month we may need to be more mindful of details, schedules, and procedures. It’s a favorable time for implementing new systems, diets, and personal routines. Virgo is skilled in discrimination- what do you need to keep in order to reach your goal and what can be jettisoned? One of my favorite sayings is “Discipline is remembering what you want.”

The new moon makes an aspect to the planet Jupiter in Taurus and to Pluto in Capricorn- the two other earth signs. The practicality of Virgo will easily mesh with Taurus and Capricorn, creating what astrologers call a “Grand Trine” (or triangle) among the earth signs. The emphasis will therefore be on manifestation. This is an excellent cycle to make your idea, concept, or plan into a reality. And how to you do that? Virgo- roll up your sleeves and start slogging through the details.

Earth is also a symbol for money and material possessions. The grand trine greases the wheels and it may be very easy to become preoccupired or overly concerned with finances at this time. Mercury, the planet in charge of Virgo, is still in Leo having just turned direct after being retrograde for the last three weeks. Our plans, choices, and desire to serve should stem from our heart’s desire (Leo).

While the stage is set for us to build, create, and manifest there is a challenging aspect that will require us to overcome obstacles. The planet Mars is in a square (90°) aspect to Saturn. Mars is energy, initiative, and drive. Saturn represents the speedbumps, stop signs, and tolls we experience on the highway of life. Saturn in Libra reminds us not to ride roughshod over the people in our life- that we may need to maintian a sense of decorum, protocol, and etiquette or else we may be frustrated in our efforts to get things done (Mars in cardinal Cancer).

The Virgo New Moon Through the Houses

If you know your natal astrology chart then look to the house where Virgo is to get a better idea of where you can use the energy of this new moon. Below are some suggestions for how this new moon can manifest based on your rising sign.

If you have:

Aries rising: The new moon occurs in your sixth house. Make an adjustment to your diet, begin a new fitness routine, or make time to volunteer to serve. These will have an immediate impact on your personal values and public reputation.

Taurus rising: The new moon occurs in your fifth house. Harness a new way to creatively promote yourself and your talents. These activities can help you to feel more secure about your mission and purpose.

Gemini rising: The new moon occurs in your fourth house. A challenge with a home or family issue may require clear and practical thinking. Put distractions aside and tune into the facts laid out before you.

Cancer rising: The new moon occurs in your third house. Sharpen your writing and communication skills. When you do you’ll find important people and groups clamoring to hear what you have to say.

Leo rising: The new moon occurs in your second house. Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish. A new budget or bookkeeper may help you manifest stronger business partnerships.

Virgo rising: The new moon occurs in your first house. Get clear about who you are and where you’re headed. Seek higher education or additional training in order to become the person you were meant to be. It can also be a favorable time to change the image you present to the world- a new wardrobe, updated hairstyle, or upbeat demeanor can go a long way.

Libra rising: The new moon occurs in your twelfth house. You may be forced to make a choice this month that creates more stability in your life but limits your future options. Go for stability.

Scorpio rising: The new moon occurs in your eleventh house. The door is open to negotiate new friendships and arrangements. You can become a bigger fish in your local pond through an important association.

Sagittarius rising: The new moon occurs in your tenth house. Find new and improved ways of doing your job more efficiently and you’ll likely see improvements in your income and the quality of your work overall.

Capricorn rising: The new moon occurs in your ninth house. Make a plan to manifest your perfect life. What does it look like? Sound like? Smell like? Taste like? Now take the first step.

Aquarius rising: The new moon occurs in your eighth house. Don’t squirm, but you may need to make a closer commitment to someone in a personal or business relationship. The devil’s in the details so read the fine print.

Pisces rising: The new moon occurs in your seventh house. Improve the quality of the relationships among you and your busineses associates, clients, and a special someone in order to manifest a sense of security in your everyday life.

“There are two tragedies in life. One is not to get your heart’s desire. The other is to get it.” -George Bernard Shaw

I started the website Miami Astrology back in late 2006 and since that time it’s gone through a couple of revisions in its design (the last one being in late 2009). I’ve been meaning to update it for sometime and finally over the last couple of weeks implemented a new design I had been working on. This design uses a palett of subtle colors and lots of images from old books. I love those old line drawings and wanted something to convey the history behind astrology.

I know that I’ve matured in my knowledge and practice of astrology and I want my website to reflect that fact. I also want the website to more clearly and obviously communicate my beliefs about astrology and the benefits it offers to those who want to know more. I’ve crafted copy that will (hopefully) resonate with visitors and give you a sense of how this ancient art can be used.

There are still some tweaks that need to be made to the website, and hopefully by next month I’ll also have an updated newsletter template that’s consistent with the look and feel of the site, too. And I certainly welcome feedback from my visitors, like you, about what you want to see on the site. Are there topics you’d like to read about?

I bring up the redesign and the “new look” because the new moon in Leo is about how we creatively express ourselves in the world. One of the ways I get to do that is through my website. Leo also represents the heart and this new moon can also reveal what you put your heart into.

The Astrology of the New Moon

The new moon occurs on July 30, 2011 at 2:40 PM EDT at 7° of Leo (Chart of the Leo New Moon). Passionate, generous, and regal the sign of Leo the lion infuses this new moon with the desire for drama, creativity, and notarity. Leo is ruled by the sun and it’s during this time of year we (here in the northern hemisphere) experience its bright, hot presence as the peak of summer. Leo and the fifth house describe what we do to shine brightly and ensure our immortality: we have a child, create art, or put our personal and unique imprint into endeavors that will live on after we’re gone. In essence, Leo’s about showing the world what you’ve got.

"It is not only fine feathers that make fine birds." Aesop

Leo also rules the heart and through this sign we can express our heart’s desires. What makes your heart flutter? What do you want to put your heart into?

Venus, the planet of values, love, and beauty is closely conjunct to this new moon, which will put an emphasis on beginning activities or projects that help us attract others, present ourselves in a better light, or earn more money by showing off our talents. It may be easier this month for us to put ourselves out there thanks to the influence of Uranus. The planet Uranus is making a trine aspect to Venus and to the new moon; this may add to our magnetism, individualize our efforts, or open up exciting social situations for us.

And while this new moon is generally positive there are two other aspects that we need to be aware of. First, Jupiter in Taurus will be making a square aspect to this new moon. Jupiter in Taurus wants more sensual satisfaction- through food, physical pleasure, or the other senses. The square aspect suggests that over-doing it could hinder or impede the “regal” impression we’re trying to make.

The second tricky aspect is the opposition between Mercury and Neptune. Mercury is in its home sign of Virgo and wants facts, details, and procedures- the “truth.” Neptune in Pisces, on the other hand, wants impressions, unconditional love and acceptance, and inspired imaginings (regardless of the truth). Can you tell fact from fiction? Are you being so critical as to completely ignore compassion and empathy? Or will you swing in the other direction and space out while ignoring important details? The key is find balance between the imagination and the truth. Considering the new moon in Leo, will you present yourself in a way that’s false (Neptune) with nothing to back it up (Mercury in Virgo)? Or can you strike a balance and offer compassionate (Neptune) service (Virgo), effective (Virgo) empathy (Pisces), and inspired (Neptune) information (Mercury)?

I hope Miami Astrology and its content offer you inspired information

If you know your chart then look to the house where 7° of Leo falls to get a better sense of how to use this new lunar cycle to put your best foot forward and show the world what you’ve got. And if you don’t know your chart, I’m always available for consultations to help you make the most of these cycles.

“If we don’t change direction soon, we’ll end up where we’re going.” Professor Irwin Corey

Today’s new moon is in Cancer, a symbol of family (among other things). Earlier today I was standing at the kitchen sink and wondering how to approach my newsletter and I could see a photograph of my family taken a few years ago during a visit to Pittsburgh on a table in the other room. My mother and father are in the photo along with my aunt and her partner, and me and my partner. A photo I never imagined could ever exist when I was a teenager struggling with my sexuality.

The photo is next to a vase with flowers my partner, Duane, brought home last night. Yesterday was our eighth anniversary and it feels really good to be a part of this family of him, me and Sophie (our dog). It feels secure. Safe. It’s based on trust. Those are words often associated with the moon in astrology, too. It’s the kind of family I imagined I would have one day, but had no idea how it would ever happen.

Well I believe it happened through a series of seemingly small changes. And that’s what an eclipse is about. The sun (ego) is temporarily obscured by the moon (intuition, gut) and provides us with an opportunity to step outside of ourselves and change the patterns we’ve created. Like the opening quotation ironically states, if we’re not careful we may end up where we’re going.

The Astrology of the New Moon

The new moon (July 2011 New Moon Chart) occurs on Friday, July 1, 2011 at 4:54 AM EDT at 9° Cancer. Emotional, drawn to the past, and hungry, the sign of Cancer is ruled by the moon. This connection imbues Cancer with a sense of home, ideally a place of emotional security. Cancer and the fourth house also deal with our heritage, roots, and parents. What, from your past, has shaped your current personality? How can you increase your security enough (Cancer) in order to feel confident enough to express your authentic self (Leo)?

This July 2011 new moon is also a partial eclipse, which will heighten the sense of possibility that a new moon can bring. This is a time of powerful beginnings, the evidence of which you may not see for six months. Do you have faith in yourself? Can you plant a seed now and be patient until it sprouts?

Astrologically we’re also in the middle of another significant event- the Cardinal Cross. In astrology the four signs that begin the seasons (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) are considered cardinal: they start things. Thus a tremendous amount of kinetic energy is contained in these signs. When planets move into these signs their actions and effects are likely to be more pronounced.

We now have Uranus in Aries, this new moon in Cancer, Saturn in Libra, and Pluto in Capricorn. These planets are all at 90° to one another and create a square. This is a highly volitile aspect with the potential to create major changes for us personally and collectively.

Uranus in Aries is calling each of us to greater individuality. This new moon eclipse will invite us to break with the past in order to move forward. Pluto in Capricorn is the power of governments; and the challenge Pluto receives from Uranus means that people are pushing for progress.

We’ve already begun to see these changes collectively with the uprisings in the middle east. In those places people are fighting for basic human rights. Here in the US the topic of gay marriage has been in the news (collective conscious) quite a bit. This is another example of the Uranus-Pluto square. Progressive ideas (Uranus) is challenging the power (Pluto) of government and social norms (Capricorn).

The cardinal cross will be in effect for many years to come (peaking in 2012), so these are themes we can expect to see again and again until the late 20-teens. This new moon is significant because it creates a close aspect to the other planets involved in that cardinal cross, and thus acts as a circuit that conducts the electricity.

If you know where 9° Cancer falls in your chart then you’ll have a better idea of how this new moon may manifest in your life. My sun is at 9° of Pisces so the new moon is casting an exact trine aspect (120°) it. The trine is an aspect that mixes the energies of the planets in ways that are satisfying. The theme of family I’ve expereinced today has been positive.

If this new moon is making a challenging aspect to something in your chart then the experience may not be pleasant. But regardless of the sensations you experience (for better or worse) look to the underlying lesson of family, emotional support, and how small changes can alter destiny.

I’m available for consultations if you’d like to explore your chart and better understand how this new moon eclipse in Cancer may affect you personally.

“Thinking is the talking of the soul with itself.” -Plato (427 BC – 347 BC)

In addtion to astrology I’ve talked a bit about my other business- Pure Pooch all natural grooming products for dogs. Earlier this year we launched Pure Pooch shampoo at the Global Pet Expo. Now in the ensuing months I continue to followup with leads, send out samples, and market the product with the help of a marketing coach.

Marketing is essentially about “getting the word out,” and the strategy and mechanics of doing so. It’s a great learning experience for me and I’ve been working hard to get all the pieces into place. And I hope the words I write for my marketing copy will lead lots of dog owners to buy Pure Pooch! Like we used to say in church “name it and claim it!”

I want the words I write and share about Pure Pooch to lead me somewhere. Today’s new moon in Gemini wants to know “where will your words lead you?”

The Astrology of the New Moon

The new moon occurs on Wednesday June 1, 2011 at 11° Gemini. The sign of the new moon describes the general theme of the month and in the air sign of Gemini this new moon offers us an opportunity to communicate, question, and share. However, this new moon is also a solar eclipse, which makes it even more powerful. And eclipse is like a special invitation from the universe. Not only is it a time for “beginnings,” but for a really exceptional beginning.

As an air sign Gemini lives in the mental realm of the mind. Ideas, words, and data are all shiny balls that can grab its attention, for a short time at least. Gemini is curious and through questions, study, or mental acrobatics it strives to understand. However, once a puzzle is solved or an answer obtained it quickly moves on to the next one. Gemini is one of the four mutable signs along with Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Mutable signs exist between two worlds. In the case of Gemini those two worlds are the inner world of ideas and the outer world of spoken words. It’s a constant dialog that switches between the inner and outer world of the mind.

Therefore, it will be important to stick with things this month and avoid being easily distracted. Mercury, the planetary ruler of Gemini, is in Taurus, an earth sign. Our desire for a destination may be frustrated by the speedbumps of everyday life. That’s okay. Pace yourself, stay the course, and go for quality over quantity.

The new moon makes a trine aspect to Saturn in Libra. Saturn can add structure and accountability to our words and in the fellow air sign of Libra we may both express and expect fairness in our interactions. Saturn has been retrograde since late January and when it turns direct on June 12th we may be better prepared to create the social connections we need to move forward.

At this new moon ask yourself how writing, blogging, or public speaking will benefit you and where it could lead you. Avoid being distracted or easily bored. Overcome boredom by finding the angle or perspective that piques your curiosity, then dig deeper or go farther. Do be social and conversational.

If you know your chart more deeply look for the house that has Gemini on its cusp. We say that Gemini “rules” that house, or is in charge of it. The meaning of this house will play an important role in your life in the month ahead. For example, Gemini “rules” the seventh house in my natal chart. This house is about partnerships, clients, competitors, and spouses. This month I may want to focus on communicating in a new way with those kinds of people. This should bode well for my Pure Pooch marketing efforts! I then look to see if the new moon is making aspects to other planets in my chart and can begin to paint a picture of the various components of the cosmic weather this month.

Contact me if you’d like to explore how this new moon solar eclipse could affect your chart.

May the idea that leads you to your next best step find you this month. Namaste’

“Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit.” e e cummings

Update 5/3: While the new moon does indeed occur today it is immediately followed by a “void of course” moon. While the new moon is a time to initiate things- today is not the day to do it if it involves serious work. VOC moon days are good for finishing up little tasks, engaging your imagination, and being more present. Read my article http://miamiastrology.com/2008/12/astrology-basics-the-void-of-course-moon/ for a more in-depth explanation of the void of course moon.

“Energy and persistence conquer all things.” Benjamin Franklin

In our fast-paced world of Facebook, Twitter, and email it can be a challenge to stay focused. The ring of a phone; the beep of a new text message; the alerts for replies, comments, and updates seem never ending. With so much that demands our time and attention it’s amazing we can get anything done. During my research for this newsletter I came across a new booked called “We Have Met the Enemy: Self-Control in an Age of Excess” by Daniel Akst (2010)

The point of the book is that it takes focus, concentration, and self-control to be successful (even above IQ). He shares this quote from his book, “At least one study of blocked writers has found that they were more productive and more creative when they were essentially forced to write instead of scribbling only when the mood struck them.”

This quote nicely summarizes the new moon’s move from Aries (inspired action) into Taurus (productive persistence).

The Astrology of the New Moon

The new moon (May-2011-New-Moon Chart) occurs on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at 12° Taurus. The new moon is a symbol for beginnings. Taurus is an earth sign and is concerned with stability, security, and productivity. Therefore, this new montly cycle is a time to initiate a steady approach to your goals with am emphasis on persistance and results.

With five planets still in Aries- Uranus, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, and Mars- there will still be the desire to assert, insert, and disrupt. But Aries is the solar “twelfth house” of this Taurus new moon. The twelfth house is considered a place of “self undoing” according to older astrological texts. So what could get your into trouble this month? Selfishness, action without purpose, and being too competitive. Bucking the rules and being a maverick. The answer isn’t complacancy, but presence. Stay in touch with your body and what it’s feeling and avoid the “shoot first, ask questions later,” mentality.

A supportive trine between the new moon and Pluto in Capricorn suggest we’re able to use the power of our goals to steady and support our efforts. One of my favorite sayings, and one that I have posted next to my computer, is “discipline is remembering what you want.” It’s a month to make sense of (Taurus) what’s driving you (Aries).

The new moon also receives a stressful aspect from Saturn, the planet of limits. We may have lofty goals, but there are limits we’ll need to consider. Adjustments may need to be made in order to bring our plans to fruition and these may be in the form of social obligations, limits to our physical abilities, or deficiencies in our skills. Don’t let these hinder your progress, but adjust your plans accordingly and move on.

Between now and Friday take 5 or 10 minutes and set your intentions for the month. Focus on persistence in your efforts, a steady approach to move forward, and productive outcomes – all keywords for Taurus. Here’s to the month ahead!

Namaste’

“Trust yourself. Create the kind of self that you will be happy to live with all your life. Make the most of yourself by fanning the tiny, inner sparks of possibility into flames of achievement.” -Foster C. McClellan

Two weeks ago I launched Pure Pooch at the Global Pet Expo in Orlando, FL. After the show was over Keith and I decided to go to an amusement park to ride the coasters. Well, I haven’t been to an amusement park in 20 years and this little excursion reminded me why.

Universal Studio has two parks and the first one we visited has one big outdoor rollercoaster called the Rip Ride Rockit. We decided to start big so we got in line. This coaster let’s you pick the music you want blaring out of your headrest speakers as you loop, and twist, and bank, and wooooshhhh. As soon as the coaster pulled out of the station it went straight up vertically 17 stories. At the very top I couldn’t even see the track in front of me. And in one second I knew this coaster was about to FLYYYY…

By the time we got off we were both a little shakey and our hearts were racing. I think the new moon in April is going to be like the apex of that coaster. There’s a great deal of potential energy in the environment and it will continue to be unleashed. On the personal level this means that it’s time to brace yourself, accellerate, and move forward. Like the rollercoaster, we’re at the top of the track and things are about to happen fast. And then faster.

The Astrology of the New Moon

The new moon (new moon chart) occurs on Sunday April 3, 2011, at 13° Aries. New moons are a symbol for beginnings, and this theme is emphasized in the sign of Aries, the first sign and the one associated with initiation. Aries is the sign of the warrior, always on the lookout for a good challenge.

By any astrological standards this new moon is off the charts. First, there is a stellium in Aries. When at least three planets are grouped together it’s considered a stellium. This month we have SIX planets in Aries. This is an incredible concentration of energy and in Aries, a fire sign I think of fire. Flames. Force. Fight. Burst. Burn. Agitate. Battle. Defend. Self-possessed. Instantiated.

Mars rules the sign of Aries. And Mars is in its own sign right now, which amplifies or exaggerates its qualities. And Mars is right next to Uranus- the lightening bolt that cracks the dam; the evolutionary step forward in consciousness that overturns institutions; the awakening that leads to liberation. Mars in Aries is like the general, or commander-in-chief of the five other planets in Aries. If he’s eager for action, so will all the other players.

Uranus has just entered Aries for the first time in 84 years. It actually entered this sign the day before the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. We see the symbolism of Uranus in Aries (personal liberation; power to the individual) in the media through stories of the lone man who set himeslf on fire that spurred a political revolution in the mideast.

The new moon is also conjunct (or next to) Jupiter. Big. Over the top. Conspicuously. With verve. Boldly. Shamelessly. Kick it up a notch. Whatever it is that you want to initate or begin, do it big.

Saturn exactly oposses the new moon at 13° of Libra. We may individually fight for our version of what’s “fair,” but to become more extreme in our actions is only asking for trouble. Saturn in Libra is also a sign of the “old” (Saturn) laws (Libra) that are being opposed. Jupiter also opposes Saturn at this time and may describe vigilanteism, or that sense of being a law (Jupiter) unto oneself (Aries).

And lastly, Pluto is widely squaring the new moon, which can leave us with that sense of trying to move an imoveable object. It’s not an easy month, but the ultimate lesson is to become self-reliant, courageous, and authentic. That’s the promise of Aries.

I knew those coasters would shake me up, and I guess that’s the point of those kinds of rides to begin with. If you find yourself on the metaphorical rollercoaster this month then throw your hands in the air and welcome the opportunity for the ride of your life. It may be time we’re all shaken out of our complacency for a while.

Namaste’

“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” -The Dalai Lama

A recent article in the New York Timesdiscusses a new area of psychological research called self-compassion. With the new moon in Pisces, a sign associated with compassion, I thought this was a timely theme for this month.

From the article:

Do you treat yourself as well as you treat your friends and family?

That simple question is the basis for a burgeoning new area of psychological research called self-compassion — how kindly people view themselves. People who find it easy to be supportive and understanding to others, it turns out, often score surprisingly low on self-compassion tests, berating themselves for perceived failures like being overweight or not exercising.

Speaking of compassion, here’s a quote by famous Pisces, Albert Einstein:

A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest–a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

Pisces is the sign of compassion- the ability to “suffer with” someone else. Pisces is also about transcendence, an idea also echoed in Einstein’s words. One quality of this sign is its desire to merge with the universal; and in order to do that it must transcend, or rise above, the limits imposed by the ego.

Where do you need to transcend this month? What situation or circumstance do you need to transcend, or rise above, in order to overcome its limitation, gain a better perspective, or experience compassion?

The Astrology of the New Moon

The new moon (chart) occurs on March 4, 2011 at 13° of Pisces. All new moons are an invitation to begin a new cycle, set new intentions, and initiate personal growth. The new moon in Pisces suggests this cycle may require us to be compassionate, empathetic, and to rise above limiting circumstances.

Pisces is the sign of “let go and let God,” and would rather wait for a miracle than make its own magic. However, while we may be asked to trust in something bigger than our own egos, it is clearly not a time to shirk responsibility. The only other two major aspects in this chart are a Jupiter-Pluto square and Saturn inconjunct the new moon and these suggest something very different than a laissez-faire attitude.

The aspect from Saturn in Libra suggests we’ll need to make an adjustment in order to live up to our responsibilities. Fair is fair and one can’t avoid the rules at this time. And the aspect between Jupiter (ruler of this new moon) and Pluto suggest that we can’t expect something for nothing. “Pray as though everything depended on God and work as though everything depended on you,” said St. Augustine

Where Do You Need to Transcend?

The last three signs of the zodiac (Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces) are considered impersonal in that the focus is no longer solely on the individual. Capricorn brings us into contact with rules, laws, and systems and we must learn to harmonize with them. Capricorn is a symbol for the morals of our society and to behave in socially acceptable ways. Aquarius brings us into contact with not just our society, but humankind in general. It’s through this sign that we feel a connection to one another, a sense of brotherhood, and collective empowerment. Pisces takes it a step farther and offers us a sense of connection to everything- the idea that we are all one- by trascending the limits of the ego. But make no mistake- to transcend is not a passive state; it’s not about closing your eyes and waiting for your spirit to mystically swirl from your body into some universal state. To transcend is active. It literally means to “climb over or beyond, surmount,” from trans- “beyond” + scandere “to climb”. What do you need to climb over or beyond this month?

The new moon is in my third house- communications. Next week I’ll be at the Global Pet Expo to launch our line of all-natural dog shmapoos and I’m going to have to TALK to a lot of people. For those of you that know me I believe that “less is more” when it comes to communicating. And this is something I’m going to have to get over if I want to do a great job at the show. I have to transcend these limits in communication.

Where is the new moon in your chart and where will you have an opportunity to transcend this month?

Namaste’

“The best way to predict the future is to invent it.” -Alan Kay

It would be difficult to talk about this new moon without talking about Egypt and the revolution that’s happening there. Why? Because this new moon is in Aquarius, the sign of brotherhood, humanitarian efforts, and egalitarian ideals. The four planets (plus Chiron) that are in Aquarius now are emphasizing these energies. More on the astrology of the new moon below.

The situation in Egypt, while it has become more tense today, is an example of the collective consciousness of a nation that has emboldened its citizen to join together and act cooperatively with one another in order to foster change. They want a more democatic form of government- another Aquarian concept whereby each member has a voice and yet is part of a larger “body” where everyone is equal.

The metaphysical axiom “As above, so below,” tells us that what we see playing out on the terrestrial plane is a reflection of what’s happening on the celestial canvas. Likewise, what happens externally in the world-at-large may also echo what we’re experiencing internally. What does this mean for us personally? Perhaps the question we might ask ourselves at this new moon is, “What needs to be revolutionized in my life?“

The Astrology of the New Moon

The new moon (New Moon Chart) occurs on February 2, 2011, at 13° Aquarius. All new moons are an invitation to initiate something new, and in the sign of the water-bearer this new moon is a favorable time for collective action, progressive thinking, and altruistic endeavors. Aquarius, while it’s called “the water-bearer,” is an air sign. What he’s pouring forth from his urn is the collective consciousness- or those thoughts and ideas that we all share as human beings. Air is the transmitter of sound and light, and it’s our thoughts, words, and spirit that engender a sense of fair play, rationality, and concern for our fellow man.

Following last month’s new moon in Capricorn, the cardinal (initiating) earth sign, this new moon in fixed (stabilizing) air (ideas, words, perceptions) and suggests it’s time use the power of our rational mind to think through issues, examine circumstances objectively, and find ways to raise our collective intelligence.

This new moon is energized by a close conjunction of Mars, the planet of action and drive. With Mars in Aquarius I think of phrases like the courageous humanitarian, assertive altruism, and passionate intelligence. It’s a time to actively find ways to give each other a “step up,” with the knowledge that by helping someone else you’re ultimately helping yourself.

Venus and Uranus are in a square aspect to one another at this new moon and this suggests that there may be surprises, upsets, and changes (Uranus) with our relationships, associations, and values (Venus). It makes sense that when we revolutionize our lives and fight for progress (whether personally or collectively) then the relationships and attachments in our lives also have to change.

Viva La Revolution

How can you take advantage of this new moon and revolutionize your life? Here are three suggestions:

Be Bold. Mars, the warrior, in Aquarius isn’t about hand-to-hand combat. It’s about doing battle on a mental level. Can you outsmart your foes? Can you think strategically? Can you defend your truth?

Be Forward Thinking. The sign of Aquarius is a symbol for the future. Leave the past behind and envision your life free from dictators, tyrants, and other habits, people, or beliefs that have kept you stagnant for too long. What does the future look like for you?

Be Unconventional. The Venus-Uranus aspect suggests that we may find allies in the most unexpected places, if we’re willing to overcome our resistance to that which is unusual or out of the ordinary. Think of the secular and Muslim Egyptians who have banded together for change.

If you know your own natal chart then the house where you have 13° of Aquarius can give you more information about how you can personally take advantage of this new moon. As always, if you’d like to explore this more deeply with an astrologer I’m always available for consultations.

Namaste’

“The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.” -Malcolm X
