“Will I find steady employment again? Thank you, Sherrie”

You will when you’re clear about what you need to be doing and what will bring you the most joy. Taurus is a workhorse. I know you’re not working because you’re not capable or willing. But right now your spirit is low because what you’ve done before no longer inspires you. It’s difficult because Taurus doesn’t welcome change, and with Sherri’s natal sun in the 8th house there is a tendancy to really focus on the survival aspects of life.

Let’s look at Sherrie’s chart more closely (Sherrie-Work-Biwheel). Sherrie is a Taurus with Venus and the moon close to her sun. Virgo, the ruler of her ascendent is also in Taurus. She has seven planets in fixed signs- this is someone who holds on and isn’t quick to change courses. The elements in astrology aptly describe our basic nature- whether that is energetic and active (like fire) or sensitive and emotional (like water). Fixed signs are also very much about security- and the less things change the greater the sense of security. But Taurus need to remember that that isn’t always the case- change is often necessary for renewal and building fortitude.

But over the last few years Sherrie has had her progressed Uranus and progressed Sun move over her MC, or career area. And in addition to those planets we find transiting Pluto squaring the whole lot at the end of his stay in Sagittarius. These are all major transits, and ones that coincide with a person desiring change, liberation, and fulfillment from his or her career. And because it’s affecting one angle (the MC in this case) also implies that it’s had a domino effect in the other angular areas of her life- her home (the IC), relationships (the Descendent), and how she approaches the world (Ascendent).

Sherrie has Gemini on the MC- so first of all it’s very likely that you’ll have multiple careers in your lifetime, as Gemini is the sign of twins. Gemini is also about speaking, writing, and learning. I’d venture to guess that Sherrie’s careers up to this point have involved at least some of those activities. The ruler of Gemini, Mercury, is also in Taurus in the 8th house, so perhaps her career involved teaching or sales. Taurus in the 8th makes me think of an insurance salesman or someone who sells financial instruments of one kind or another. Or perhaps she is an artist – doesn’t know it yet.

To answer your question directly- yes, you will find steady work again. The tumult of these past few years was to wake you up- to help you get in touch with something deeper inside of yourself that you’ve kept buried for too long. The transits of the outer planets, like Pluto, Neptune, or Uranus, are about helping us step outside of our comfortable egos and really get to the heart of the matter.

Transiting Neptune has also been squaring Sherrie’s progressed MC, which is now in Leo in the 11th house. Neptune’s function is to dissolve in order to get to the essense of something. Leo- another artist sign- is where both the progressed MC and the progressed moon are right now. The progressed moon is like a flashlight into our lives, and where it spends 30 months in a sign is where we’ll turn our focus. The progressed moon in Leo in the 11th house- that sounds like someone who is learning to express herself a little more among groups. Or it could be someone who is learning to become the leader of a group. Either way, you need the energy and attention of other like minded people right now- and whehter you find that in a local actors workshop or through a cause you truly believe in, I would encourage you to get involved.

And, the more you’re able to network the more likely you’ll come across more potential job leads.

Keep in mind, Sherrie that you’re also in a new progressed lunar phase. About two to two and a half years ago you turned a major chapter in your life. Now you’re at the start of a new 30 year cycle, so it’s natural to be apprehensive and unsure at this part of the journey- you’ve stepped onto a road you’ve never been down before. Over the next few years you’ll have the opportunity to make a clearer choice about which direction you want to take, so now that you have some time on your side I’d encourage you to do some real soul searching. It’s an astrological spring time in your life- what do you want to plant? What kinds of things do you want to harvest in about 13 years when you have your progressed full moon?

You will be productive again, Sherrie. That’s no doubt. But don’t look to the past of what you’ve been used to to provide it for you. It’s time to step out, be innovative, and seize the moment.

I wish you much success and do let us know how things work out!

Namaste’

“I hired a gentleman to do some legal work for me . I speak to him once a month and see him approximately once a month. For some reason I cant stop thinking of him. At times I thought the feelings were mutual and other times he can be very distant. I would like to know if he has any interest in me or not so I can move on. Thanks, Kristen”

Thanks for writing in, Kristen. In astrology when we compare the charts of two individuals in a relationship it’s called synastry. This technique basically overlays one chart on top of the other to see how the planets interact with one another. However, before counseling two people I much prefer to deal with them individually. Each person will bring his or her own personal agenda into a relationship and it’s better to understand that context before analyzing two people together.

Before we look at your chart there are two things I need to address. When you emailed me your question you included the birhtday of the gentleman in question. First, to cast an accurate natal chart the time of birth and the location are both necessary. Now, just having the birth date will give us a lot of information, like the Sun sign, the sign of most of the planets, and most of the aspects. Where it becomes problematic is that we can’t determine the houses or ascendent; and it’s possible that the Moon or another planet may have changed signs sometime during that day.

The second issue I need to address is one of ethics. As a professional astrologer I’m not at liberty to read someone’s chart without their permission. It’s very common in relationships for one person to want to know what’s happening with a partner, and the best way to handle that is to simply ask the other person. This alleviates any messy ethical issues and we can verify the birth information so that an accurate chart can be cast.

Now, knowing someone’s birth day is fairly common so I don’t mind talking about the Sun sign in general as it relates to your question.

Kristen’s Relationship Astrology

So onto Kristen’s chart! (Kristen-Natal-Chart) As we can see from her natal chart Kristen is an Aries- dynamic, quick, and independent. To see how the energy of the chart balances out I count the number of planets in each element (fire, earth, air, and water) and the number of planets in each modality (cardinal, fixed, and mutable). Kristen has four planets in fire signs and four planets in cardinal signs. This describes someone who is very active, likes a challenge, and moves into new situations easily (but without a lot of forethought).

Kristen’s Gemini ascendent (or rising sign) shows that she approaches new situations with a sense of curiosity. That, combined with her Libra Moon, imbue Kristen with a frienly and outgoing personality. Gemin and Libra are both air signs, so there’s a need to communicate and connect with others. Saturn, the planet of structure and discipline, is in Aquarius, another air sign, right on Kristen’s midheaven (the top of the chart). Kristen wants to be seen by others as responsible, authoratative, with strong opinions. This triad of air signs connecting her rising sign, Moon, and Saturn give her a good memory, skillful communications, and the ability to fix her mind on something and hold tight!

Kristen has Venus, the planet of relating, across the chart from Pluto, planet of intensity and transformation. Kristen doesn’t take love lightly. If it’s not intense and potentially life-changing then she doesn’t want to bother. We can hear this echoed in the lyrics of Janis Joplin, who also had Venus opposing Pluto, when she sang, “…take another little piece of my heart…” Kristen’s Venus is also reaching out to Neptune in an harmonious way. Neptune is idyllic. This Venus/Neptune combination therefore gives love that magical, storybook feel. These two different needs of her Venus- one of intense, almost fated connection and one of of idealizing love could potentially be difficult to find in a mere mortal.

The last thing I’ll address in Kristen’s chart is Sagittarius on the descendent. In astrology the desecendent is the “3 o’clock” position on the chart wheel- directly opposite of the rising sign. The descendent describes those traits we project onto a partner. Kristen is probably attracted to men who seem well-educated, well-traveled, and who seem to offer her a way of broadening her horizons (all qualities of Sagittarius). In relationships she wants to be the student (Gemini rising) who can sit at the feet of a teacher (Sagittarius).

Returning to Kristen’s question, we see some interesting choice of words. The man in question did some “legal work” for her. Sagittarius rules systems like the law and religion. He obviously has an advanced degree and is probably very knowledgable. Kristen also “can’t stop thinking about him,” again, the Venus-Pluto combination can become obssessed with the object of affection. And her Aries Sun views life and situations as challenges to be fought and won (Aries is the hero/warrior). And for some reason her not knowing his feelings or status is keeping her in a place where she feels stuck (“…so that I can move on”). The air planets we talked about needs information and objective facts. Without those facts it’s hard for Kristen to discern the situation.

Kristen, my advice for you is to calm your mind and try to get in touch with your inner intuition. What is your gut telling you? Men are not hard to read; there are no hidden agendas or shifting emotions to discern with us. Secondly, I’d want to know if this is someone you think is worth pursuing in a relationship, or is there another, deeper reason for your strong attraction to him (Venus-Pluto)? Is the attraction based on a fantasy or reality (Venus-Neptune)? And lastly, what sort of signals are you giving off to him? With Saturn in Aquarius on your midheaven (appearing very “in control”) are you sure he can interpret how you’re feeling on the inside? Too much air can rationalize and disconnect us from our feelings. Remember, feelings need to be shown and not just discussed.

Good luck Kristen, and do keep us posted on how things turn out!

“Just wondering why I havent found the one yet? I seem to fall for ones that are always attached. Does that have something to do with my Saturn placement?” -Debbie

Thanks for writing in, Debbie. As I’ve mentioned before in this column, relationships and compatability are tricky things. Each of us is more than just a natal chart. We’re expressions of our genetics, environment, upbringing…not to mention the result of our conscious (and unconscious) choices. However, astrology is useful because it can help us understand ourselves better. And when we understand ourselves better we’re able to make better choices.

Debbie’s Astrology

Let’s look at some aspects of Debbie’s astrological chart (natal-chart.pdf) to see if we can get a sense of who she is and how she operates. Debbie has five planets in air signs and five planets in mutable signs. Air is a symbol for the mind, thoughts, and ideas. With a preponderance of air in the chart we can say that Debbie is a thinker- but maybe too much so. There’s a rule in cooking that too much is like not enough- and the same holds true for thinking. That combined with a lot of mutable energy could describe someone who is easily influenced, apt to change her mind often, and unsure of her decisions.

Debbie has the Sun in Pisces. Pisces, in general, loves to be in love. The idea of being swept up into an all consuming relationship makes their toes curl. Pisces is influenced by the planet Neptune, who function is to melt, dissolve, and transcend. With Scorpio rising and a Venus-Pluto trine I would suspect that men are drawn to her. Debbie also has her Sun square to Uranus- she speaks her mind, has an off-beat sense of humor, and can be very magnetic.

This isn’t to take the responsibility off of Debbie, but for someone who loves to be in love, is easily persuaded, and often goes after things she may later regret (Mars opposed the Moon) we can see how she could get swept up by any Tom, Dick, or Harry that comes along. Remember, Debbie, that just because we have an opportunity doesn’t mean we always have to take it (or jump on it).

Debbie has Scorpio rising and Taurus on the decendent. To her relationships represent security- both emotionally and materially. The tricky think about our decendent is that, while it describes the characteristics we seek in a partner, it’s really a part of ourselves that we need to integrate into our personality. With Taurus on Debbie’s decendent she might want to be more practical, financially stable, and productive; and then she’ll probably attract better partners.

Debbie mentions her Saturn placement. Debbie has Saturn conjunct Jupiter in Libra in the 11th house. The 11th house is how we receive love. With Satun and Jupiter paired up I would expect there to be a nice balance between structure and openness there. It’s not so much her Saturn placement causing her concern as it might be the aspect between Saturn-Jupiter and the Sun-Mars in Pisces. That particular aspect (called an inconjunct) is one that describes the need for ajustment. Could it be at times Debbie loses all restraint and at other times enforces her boundaries too strictly?

My advice to you, Debbie (who is 28, by the way), is that in two years, after you have your Saturn return, you’ll probably view the relationships in your life differently. The Saturn return is a time in our lives when we finish maturing, begin building a foundation for ourselves, and enforce some structure into our lives. You certainly have the potential to find a healthy, nurturing, and stable relationship. Be patient with your feelings, wise with your choices, and true to yourself. I wish you much happiness. Namaste’

“I am at a cross road in my life so I need an advice. I am a 37 year old female and recently divorced. Can I find the right path in my life and once and for all have a happy life?” – Lisa

Thanks for writing in Lisa. While I’m sorry to hear about your divorce you may need to accept that this is all a part of your soul’s journey towards fulfillment. In astrology we know that our study of cycles will, at times, describe periods of smooth sailing and at other times warn of rough seas ahead. We may not be able to change the waves, but we can certainly adjust our course.

You haven’t given me much more information about what’s been happening, so I’ll address your question about finding the right path from a general perspective. As far as happiness goes, that’s far too subjective (and nearly impossible) for anyone– astrologer, counselor, or priest– to predict for another person. I recently wrote a blog post about happiness that references an article from The Atlantic Monthly. I suggest you read that as well.

When a client asks me about “direction,” it’s important to find out a few things first. Looking at Lisa’s chart (natal-and-progressed-charts) let’s focus on some simple indicators about direction.

The Nodes in Astrology

Starting very broadly, in astrology we determine the soul’s direction by looking at the nodes. The nodes are not planets, but points. These points are where the path of the Sun and the path of the Moon intersect as they (seemingly) circle the earth. The north node is that point that describes our soul’s journey in this incarnation. The south node describes what our soul has mastered in previous incarnations. The south node, then, is that stuff we’re really good at. It’s like second nature to us because we’ve done it before. The north node, though, hold the key to what we should be striving for now.

Lisa has her south node in Cancer and her north node in Capricorn. What this describes is an individual who is very good at being the mothering type, running a household, and putting the needs of others first. In past lives (Cancer south node) she gave up being an independent go-getter in order to take care of the tribe or clan. Now, in this lifetime (Capricorn north node), her challenge is to get out into the world, develop self-respect, self-confidence, and learn to take care of herself. Lisa’s soul desire is to feel safe- but she must create that safety and security herself and not depend on one person, or group of people, to provide that for her. This is further emphasized in Lisa’s chart because the nodes are in the 2nd and 8th houses- self-worth, value, personal resources.

So, Lisa, when we consider your question about direction I can generally answer: “Move in the direction that will help you become self-sufficient, responsible, and goal-oriented.” For example, if you asked me, “Should I marry again soon or go back to school?” I would certainly answer- “Go back to school!” Whatever you can do to create goals that will help you achieve personal success is a step in the right direction.

The next indicator of direction would be to find out what Lisa’s purpose is and how she can use that in the world. In astrology we look at the 9th house for mission and purpose and the 10th house for how that purpose is put to use in the world (aka career). Lisa has Leo on the cusp of her 9th house, ruled by the Sun in Taurus. Her mission is to use her creativity and gifts (Leo) to create beautiful, tangible things (Taurus). This may be a craft, or it could be her aesthetic- sharing her flair for design, color, or pattern. With Virgo ruling her 10th house she needs to put those skills to use in ways that are practical, useful, and of service to others.

Progressions in Astrology

The last indicator we’ll look at is her progressed chart (the outer wheel on the natal chart posted above). The progressed chart helps us see where the individual currently is in his or her life. The progressed chart moves the planets forward and gives us an indication of what the current conditions look like. One of the most important indicators is the progressed lunar phase. Just as we all experience the monthly lunar (moon) phase, the progressed lunar phase describes a longer, thirty year cycle.

Lisa had a progressed new moon back in 1999. If she were a client of mine I would ask her to think back to that time and try to remember what seeds she was planting then- what “new chapter” of her life did she feel she was embarking on? Now, in 2009, Lisa is in the First Quarter phase. This phase is marked by lots of activity. It’s like early summer when all the plants are growing rapidly and there are lots of leaves. We may not see fruit, but growth is obvious. This is a time when Lisa should be taking risks, following through, and stepping out. If there is a goal to pursue then now is the time to take real action. It’s not a time to sit back, relax, and wait for someone to come along and tell her what to do. It’s time for LISA to do it!

Lisa, without knowing more details I hope this advice has been helpful. Ending a relationship is never easy; and it’s important not to let this critical period in your life pass you by without taking advantage of the energies that are available to you to follow your hearts desire and create the life you really want. I wish you much luck in the future and do keep us posted on your progress. Namaste’.

PS: Dear readers: Even though I’m located in Miami, FL, I’m available by phone or Skype for consultations regardless of where you’re located. If you prefer to see an astrologer in person but you’re not in Miami, I’m happy to recommend someone in your area.

Update: On June 30, 2009 I received this response from Lisa:

Hi Ron,
Thank you for your advice, I found it very helpful. When I think about your question ‘What seed did I plant in 1999,’ I remember that my strongest whish was to go to Australia and live with my brother there. Now I am in Australia and as you said that this is my time to go back to school, I am in the school again. I hope that I am going to succeed in it. Thanks again for resolving some doubts about my current situation.

“I have just turned 43 and am currently residing in Miami. I [want to] pursue relocating to Canada with my daughter (from a previous marriage), and my husband who is a Canadian citizen. We have it in our goal to reach Canadian territory by December of this year and would like to know what my birth chart reveals in this manner. Would December of 2009 seem right for this move?” – Jane

Thanks for writing in Jane. Relocation is a popular topic in astrology and there are many ways of determining where and when to go. For the purposes of this column I’ll keep it simple and look at a few of your transits and progressions for later this year.

As I’ve noted before, astrology is good at describing conditions and not necessarily outcomes. A weatherman can predict rain for tomorrow, but he can’t say if you’ll get wet or not- going outside is up to you. In your case, Jane, it sounds like you already have the outcome in mind (moving to Canada) and want some assurance that the conditions will support your decision.

Looking at your progressions and transits for December I would say that, yes, the time does look right for making a move. A person’s natal chart will always be the same, so to account for how one changes, and describe the experiences encountered that enable those changes, astrology employs transits and progressions.

Transits match the current placement of the planets to those in your natal chart. For example, as of this writing the planet Saturn is located at 15 degrees of Virgo. If your natal chart has planets at this degree, or in aspect to this degree, then we could reasonably say that your current conditions are going to include increased responsibility, duty, or hard work.

Progressions assign a day for a year of life and give us the broad landscape of one’s life. They also help to describe the inner conditions and responses of the person. For example, when your progressed Moon moves into the 12th house then you may find yourself feeling more introspective, meditative, or confined. Astrolology is not only a symbolic language but a tool to determine timing through the study of cycles. We can describe the conditions and give an approximate time to expect them. Thus, having the correct birth time is critical for accurate timing of changes and events.

The first set of progressions in Jane’s chart (Jane’s Charts) describe conditions that will be ideal for releasing the past, a home, or female relative. Soon after, in early November, the conditions will be open for pursuing a new direction, participating in lots of activity, and asserting oneself. The first is the progressed Moon quincunx her natal Moon (home, family, mother); and the second is the progressed Moon conjunct natal Mars (action, activity, assertiveness). Selling a home and severing old ties, then putting ones energy into packing up a house and moving certainly fit these conditions.

In late November transiting Neptune makes a stressful aspect to Jane’s midheaven and describes a time when there’s confusion around how she is seen by others. Since she’s considering moving out of the country she may have issues around paperwork or passports. The particular aspect betwen these points says that it will be a stressful time but that patience is the best course of action.

Mid-December brings the transit of Uranus, planet of change, through Jane’s 9th house and passing over her natal Saturn-Mercury pair and opposing her natal Moon. Last minute doubts will be replaced by an excitement for change and new experiences. This coincides with the date Jane suggested (December 2009) so it sounds as though she’s putting these astrological conditions to good use!

The last progression I’ll note occurs in early January, 2010. Jane’s progressed Sun will meet up with her natal North Node. The meaning of the North Node is enough to fill a book, but in this context it represents new people, new groups, and new situations. Jane will be experiencing conditions that bring her into contact with new groups of people. This sounds like what happens after one moves to a new place and finds she must meet new people and create new social networks.

Jane, all of this sounds very positive for making your move in December. I do want to tell you about one important planetary condition: Jupiter, the planet of travel and expanding one’s horizons, will be retrograde from June 15 to October 12, so use that period to review, recalculate and reimagine the upcoming move. You may not feel like you’re making any progress during this time, but once Jupiter rolls forward in October you’ll feel a real sense of movement begin to happen. Jane, I wish you the best of luck in your move! Do keep us posted.

“Hello! I left an HR Managment career 4 years ago due to apathy in my job which involved a tremendous amount of traveling. In reality, I became sick from overwork and found my life hollow. I stayed home for a year trying to rebuild my confidence and decide a new life purpose. I was offered a job in the teaching field and have been there for the last two years. I enjoy the work but find that it still may not be enough for me. I am thinking about pursuing a masters degree in counseling but find my self undecisive and, to be honest, afraid of making the wrong decision. I am at a crossroads. I have life balance now but I am severly underpaid for job and the talents I know I have. Please help.” -Rachel

Thanks for writing in, Rachel. Making a career transition can certainly be a stressful time and I understand your situation, having gone through it myself (a few times!). In astrology there are a few places we look in the chart to help someone uncover what they’re most suited to do. And we can “progress” the chart to see how you, as an individual, will change and grow over time. Taken together the natal chart and the progressed chart help us to piece together a map you can use to navigate during this time.

Rachel's chart- natal inner wheel, progressed outer wheel

In the natal chart the cusp, or beginning, of the 10th house is called the midheaven (or MC) and is found right at the top of the wheel. The MC describes how we want to be viewed by society. Put another way it’s our career- what we want to be known for. With Leo, a fire sign, on the cusp of your 10th house, Rachel, you need to work in field where you can be recognized for your unique talents. Working behind the scenes won’t bring your happiness. Creativity, passion, and acclaim need to be part of what you do.

You mentioned counseling (and coaching in another part of your letter). Either of these could be the right answer because it will afford you the ability to work for youself and be recognized in your own right- not as an agent of a big company or institution. The houses in your chart that astrologers look at for job/career are the 2nd, 6th, and 10th and all of them have a fire sign on the cusp- meaning you’ll do best when you can work independently, use your intuitive knowledge, and have a good deal of freedom.

With your Sun in the 8th house, a Scorpio ascendent and Neptune in the first house I would imagine you’re sensitive to the undercurrents around you and have a strong sense of empathy for others- important traits to have in counseling or coaching. An 8th house Sun is also interested in change and transformation and being in a helping profession like counseling can satisfy that need. Venus in Cancer conjunct Jupiter also endows you with the ability to nurture- almost to a fault. If you do get into either of these fields make sure you don’t overextend yourself or bring home stray clients!

Now let’s step back and see where you are in your life using the progressed chart (the outer wheel of the chart). In astrology the progressed lunar phase sets the broad landscape of our lives. Like the monthly lunar phase that moves from new, to first quarter, to full, etc. the progressed lunar phase also goes through these changes, but does this over the course of a 30 year period, where each phase is roughly 2.5 to 3 years long.

Looking at your progressed chart, Rachel, we see in 2004 you entered the “new” phase- this was an important time when one stage of your life was ending and another just beginning. Now you’re in the crescent phase, which is about expansion, struggle, and setting a course for moving ahead. It’s certainly a stressful time because you’ve not been down this path before – everything is new. But it is important because, as I said, it’s about choosing a direction and taking the steps to move FORWARD. It is time to decide, a time to move out and take RISKS.

We know that Gemini is a dual air sign- it can be of two minds and can easily vascilate between two choices. With only two planets in Fixed signs it will be difficult for you to make a choice and stick with it. It’s important to accept this about yourself and not let it hinder you. Call on people you know and trust to help you.

Rachel, this is an important time and a decision must be made. It’s like standing at the bus stop, unsure if you want to go downtown or not. Sooner or later the bus is going to pass you by and the opportunity will be lost. Your progressed Sun is in the 9th house now, so going back to school for an advanced degree, or any type of education, is a viable option. Addtionally, your progressed Moon will be making a sextile to your natal Jupiter (which is also in your 9th house) in September- this describes an opportunity to expand yourself and find fullfillment (and coincides with the start of the academic semester).

The 9th house is also your mission and purpose in life. With Jupiter, the ruler of your 2nd house (income), in the 9th I would say that once you follow your true desire the money will follow. Don’t look to money to motivate you or be the deciding factor.

I wish you all the best, Rachel, and please do let us know how things unfold.

“I am a 48 year old male. I read in my computer purchased (on-line) transitory chart that I have Chiron square coming up in April 2010- Dec 2011. In doing some research this claims to be a part in my life where I will expect some limititions that have to do with my loss of mind/body/life/soul. I just started to learn about astrology. I have a new born grandson. Does this mean something bad is going to happen to me like death/bad accident, where I will never be able to be myself again? I am really freaking out to the point that I am scared of everything.” -Jim

Jim, I’m sorry to hear you’re feeling so anxious about what you’ve read about Chiron. It’s important to remember that astrology is good a two things: the timing of events and the description of circumstances. That second point, put another way, is that astrology is good at describing conditions not outcomes. Astrology is a symbolic language and gives us concepts to use in understanding ourselves.

I also want to bring up an ethical issue- every astrologer, whether they meet clients in person or write articles for publication, have a responsibility to frame their interpretations in ways that are constructive and useful. To use language that invokes fear or anxiety helps neither the client nor the practice of astrology. As a member of three national organization (AFA, NCGR, OPA) I abide by their ethical guidelines for professional astrologers.

The Astrology of Chiron

Chiron, discovered in 1977, is not a planet, but either a planetoid or coment caught in an orbit around the Sun between Saturn and Uranus (more on this later). Astrologers immediately looked to the mythology of this character for clues as to its meaning.

In mythology Chiron’s father was Saturn, who transformed himself into a horse in order to flee from his wife during an affair with Philyra. Thus, Chiron was born a centaur- half man and half horse. While most centaurs were rather rowdy, Chiron devoted himself to the study of medicine, philosophy, and mathematics. He lived a reclusive life, until he was accidentally wounded in his heel by one of Hercules’ arrows. The pain was very great, but being immortal he could forsee no end to his suffering, thus he voluntarily traded his immortality in order to end his suffering.

Chiron is associated with the wounded healer- an almost Christ-like character that must suffer in order to heal others from suffering. From the myth of Chiron we can surmise he is of a spiritual nature, having transcended his “animal” side in order to pursue philosophy. He is also transformational- having made the choice to expereince transformation rather than endure the steady pain of existance as he knew it.

But What Does This Mean for Jim?

In looking at Jim’s chart we see he has Chiron at 0 degrees of Pisces in his 8th house. In his email Jim mentioned a computer report he ordered noting an upcoming square. This is incorrect. Currently Chiron is moving through the sign of Aquarius and in 2010 will move into Pisces. What Jim will be experiencing is his Chiron return- this is when Chiron returns to the position it held at birth. Chiron’s orbirt around the Sun is 51 years, so all of us experience a Chiron return around the age of 51.

Whenever a planet returns to where it was in our natal (birth) chart it’s considered the completion of a cycle and the start of a new cycle. During the return we’re confronted with situations or feelings to help us determine whether or not we’ve integrated the lessons of that planet into our life. If that awareness doesn’t come from within us then we may unconsciously draw circumstances into our lives that help us figure it out.

The Chiron return then is about integrating what it means to be human, to have “wounds,” and finding ways of using our humanity to alleviate the suffering of others. It’s not about physically dying or becoming incapacitated but about consciously choosing to transcend those the things in our life that keep us restricted and bound up (Saturn) in order to move towards freedom, independence, and insight (Uranus).

There are two things that stand out for me out in Jim’s chart. The first is his Sun sqaured to Neptune. The Sun in Aquarius can be independent, unpredictable, and objective. The square aspect to Neptune, who’s function is dissolve, could indicate a personality that feels victimized, or one that doesn’t have a strong sense of self. The second thing I noticed in the chart is a T-square among the Moon, Mars, and Venus. The T-square is a configuration of stress, and the planets involved could suggest an individual who finds it very difficult to get his needs met in a relationship or finds it hard to express his real feelings.

When looking at challenging aspects in the chart and then considering the Chiron return my prognonsis is that this is a time when Jim needs to dig deeply into his subconcious mind to identify and deal with some of these unfulfilling patterns and work on tranforming them into something he can use to heal others. Having Chiron in the 8th house speaks of a wounding around emotional security. Because Chiron is the story of being abandoned by one’s father the issues Jim may expereince could be with his own father or parenting issues. It’s interesting that Jim mentions his new grandson. Not being the boy’s parent will give Jim much insight into human development and he may begin to notice family patterns starting to surface. Jim has an opportunity to heal his own father issues through the relationship with his grandson.

Jim, I wish you much joy and fulfillment in the future and hope you see the next few years as an opportunity to transform personal wounds into a healing tonic for those around you. Keep us posted!

Update: Jim emailed back on 3/26 to say:

I cannot start to thank you enough. You have made my day, and maybe even the rest of my life. You alone have taken me out of doubt. Is it possible for me to set up a date to visit you for a private consultation?

“Did I pass the Florida Bar Exam, that I took in February, results are expected on April 13th, and I am dying to know?” – Matt

Thanks for submitting your question, Matt. In order to answer this question using astrology I’m going to look at two charts. The first is a horary chart, cast for the date and time I, as the astrologer, received and understood your question. The reason I chose this type of chart is because your question can be answered with a simple yes or no. Then, I also looked at your natal chart, cast for the birth date and time you supplied. I did that to confirm the answer I believe the horary chart is giving.

Click to download a PDF of the horary chart: horary-did-i-pass-the-bar-exam

The Astrology of the Question

In a horary chart the person asking the question (the “querent”) is represented by the planet that rules the Ascendent (the “9 o’clock” position on the wheel, or eastern horizon). In this chart Taurus is on the Ascendent, and is ruled by Venus. The question at hand concerns the passing of a test- the bar exam. This is represented by the ruler of the 9th house, as the 9th house rules legal systems as well as higher education. We find Capricorn on the 9th house making Saturn the ruler of the question at hand. It’s interesting that in this horary chart Capricorn is ruling both the 9th house as well as the 10th house, the house of career.

Venus is in Aries, the sign of its detriment. It’s also in the 12th house and retrograde, further weakening its position. Venus is backing up to where it was in early February- a sign that the querent is going to have to re-do or revisit something that happened in early February. Matt said that he first took the bar in February, so this may indicate he will be taking it again.

Saturn is in Virgo, also retrograde. Since Saturn rules “the exam” and it’s retrograde this indicates that the results won’t be what were hoped for.

The Moon in a horary chart is the co-significator of the querent (Matt) and shows the general mood. The Moon is in Libra applying to an opposition to Venus. The Moon is also making a square to Pluto, which is conjunct the 9th house. These indicate difficulty or problems attaining what Matt wants, which is to pass the bar.

Based on the horary chart I would say that Matt is not going to pass the bar exam.

Click to download a PDF of the natal chart: natal-chart-for-matt

Taking a quick look at his natal chart we find 20 degrees of Pisces on the Midheaven, or 10th house cusp (at the top of the chart). This is the area of the chart that represents career and social standing. Currently, Uranus is transiting over this point, and opposing transiting Saturn at 18 degrees of Virgo. Matt’s Moon is at 16 degrees of Virgo. This suggests to me that there will be an unexpected or surprising events around career issues (Uranus on the Midheaven) that will bring about some disappointment (Saturn on the Moon).

Considering both the horary chart and Matt’s natal chart I would say that he will not pass the bar.

Matt, this may sound really upsetting to you, and understandably so. I get the sense from your natal chart that law is really just a stepping stone to something bigger for you- like public service or politics. With the Sun, Mercury and your Ascendent in Gemini I’m sure you have the gift of gab! Pisces on the Midheaven suggests a career in service to others. And your natal Venus in Aries opposing Pluto and Jupiter can give you a lot of charisma in groups.

I wish you much luck and success in your future endeavors and please do let us know the results of your exam.

“I marry and divorced a person [who is a] Cancer and this did not work after trying for twenty one years. I need to know which is the sign that is compatible for me in all aspects.” – Maggie

Thanks for writing in Maggie. This is probably the most popular topic in astrology. Many of us want answers to our relationship questions – who is the best match for me, when will I find love, and will it last? Of course the answer isn’t as simple as matching Sun signs but goes much deeper. While we are agents of free will we’ve also been influenced by our environment. For example, our parent’s relationship was the first template we had for interaction and colors how we interact as adults. Astrology can give us clues as to the kinds of needs we’re trying to meet and what “patterns” – both conscious and unconscious- we’re operating under.

In astrology there are two primary ways of looking at compatibility. The first involves looking at the chart of each person to see where planets in one chart align with planets in the other. This is called synastry. The second method is to take both charts and “average” them together creating a third chart, called a composite chart. This is the chart of the relationship, not a real person, but can give insight into the dynamics the relationship may experience. Maggie didn’t provide the birth informaton of her ex-husband, except to say he was a Cancer.

Note: For ethical reasons most astrologers will not cast a chart for a person without their permission. If you see an astrologer and want to see the chart for your partner then you must get written permission from him or her.

The Astrology of Relationships

Maggie, with your Sun in Aries you’re likely to be headstrong, dynamic, and enthusiastic. Aries is a cardinal fire sign- so it’s associated with creativity and leadership. Cardinal signs want movement; they want to “start” things. It wants to GO! You also have five other planets beside the Sun in cardinal signs, which could describe someone who rarely sits still!

Maggie has Venus in Aries. In astrology Venus is a symbol for love, how we relate, and our values. Venus is also a symbol for our self-esteem needs, or how good we feel about ourselves. We often look to others- friends and lovers – to help meet our self-esteem needs because we want feedback, we want to be reassured that who we are is important and we want to be validated. With Venus in Aries Maggie needs to take action to feel validated. It’s important for her Maggie to be able to express her own identity and take independent action in order to feel good about herself.

Maggie also has Venus opposing her Moon. Let’s discuss the Moon first then tackle the opposition. The Moon in our chart is a symbol for our emtional well-being, our habits, and what we need to feel safe. Maggie has her Moon in Libra- the sign of compromise, balance, and sociability. Libra is an air sign, so it’s mental. A Libra Moon tends towards a logical approach to interpersonal situations. The emotions are expressed through ideas and words. You feel safe when you can think through a situation and have objective, rational facts to consider. There’s a strong need for everyone to get along and avoid disharmony.

So on one hand Maggie needs emtional harmony and balance to feel safe (Moon in Libra) and on the other hand she needs activity and challenge to get her validation needs met (Venus in Aries). The opposition between the Moon and Venus means that she often has to choose which one will get met, to the detriment of the other. This is an innate dichotomy in Maggie and something she will need to learn to balance in her own life. No relationship can meet all of our needs completely and compromise is one of the most important skills to foster.

Let me take a moment to address Maggie’s ex-husband, the Cancer. Cancer is also a cardinal sign, and depending on his birthday, this means that his Sun could be making a challenging aspect (the “square” or 90 degree angle) to her Sun and/or her Moon. People with planets square to planets in another person’s chart invite challenge. Maggie was probably attracted to her husband initially because of the challenge (Aries loves a challenge). Cancer is a water sign, a symbol for emotions, and Cancers want emtional interaction- whether that’s laughing together or arguing together. I’d imagine this might have been too much for Maggie’s Libra Moon to handle- a Moon that wants harmony and a rational approach to feelings.

The shadow side of Cancer involves emotional manipulation and with Maggie’s Moon next to Saturn and Neptune she is probably very sensitive to deception. Maggie has the planet Uranus at 14 degrees of Cancer. I wonder if his birthday was within four days of July 6? If so his Sun would be conjunct, or next to, her Uranus. This type of connection in astrology would have been very alluring for him, as Maggie would have appeared to be very exciting and different (Uranus).

With all of that being said, Maggie keep these points in mind when considering a partner:

1. Generally, with your Sun in Aries, other fire signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) as well as air signs (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius) could be a nice match because you’re speaking a similar or complimentary language.

2. Remember that your Moon is in air- you need rational communication to feel safe. With the Moon in Libra emotional harmony is very important to you.

3. Remember that your Venus is in fire- you need the freedom to act as you see fit. With Venus in Aries you need a certain amount of independence in your relationship in order to feel good about yourself.

4. Your Moon and Venus are on opposite sides of the chart- you need to learn that you can’t have both a sense of safety and validation with a partner, or at least at the same time. This means you’ll need to learn to do what you need to do to pick up the slack.

5. With so many planets in cardinal (active) signs you may want a partner who complimments and balances that type energy. Mutable signs can easily “go with the flow” and may be a good companion for your active lifestyle. Consider a Sagittarius or Gemini (both mutable; fire and air, respectively). Conversely, you do have Taurus on your descendent- that area of our chart the describes what we seek in others. This doesn’t mean you need to date a Taurus, but it does indicate that you do seek stability and practicality in a partner, which could be another good balance to all that cardinal energy.

As you can see there’s a lot that contributes to the compatibility between two people: our parent’s relationship, our environment, our inner needs, etc. While I cannot say definately the best type of person for you my best advice is to use the next five weeks (while Venus is retrograde) and reconsider your values- what is important to you, Maggie? Once you’re clear with what Maggie needs then you’ll be more likely to find it.

I wish you much happiness Maggie! Do keep us posted as to any new relationships that come along!

UPDATE: I received this email from Maggie on 3/10/2009 after posting her question:

Dear Ron:

Oh my God! I got chills as you describe exactly how I feel and was not able to understand why or what was going on, like a pull between two different paths. Like you said is very hard to find that person that can meet both needs and I need to learn.

I have been dating a Sagittarius and felt in heaven but as you said there is always something missing, I broke up the relationship and this week we reconciled. You made me cry of joy and can not imagine how much this helps me to understand why I feel pulled from one side to the other.

My ex-husbands date of birth July 7th, 1950, you are right there also. Incredible!!

I’m definitely interested in learning more, I will check from time to time for your classes.

Thank you kindly,

Maggie
