“My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind.” –Albert Einstein
The new moon occurs on February 24th, 2009 at 8:35 pm (EST) at 6 degrees 35 minutes of Pisces. The constellation of Pisces is two fish, bound together by a chord. In mythology they symbolize Venus and her son Eros who turned themselves into fish in order to escape the wrath of Typhon. In keeping with this story and the influence of Neptune Pisces is associated with illusion, disguise, and the desire to escape.
Pisces watery connection with the ocean lends itself to the idea of merging, or dissolving our ego boundaries and becoming one with eternal spirit. Picture that old
Alka Seltzer commercial with the tablet representing our individual imagination and the glass of water representing the collective unconscious. Plop Plop Fizz Fizz…and before you know it we’re gone. The basic message of this month is to “let go and let God.” Let yourself dissolve into your spiritual source and you’ll wind up feeling more faith, finding more forgiveness, and fostering more compassion for yourself and others.
The quote by Einstein, himself a Pisces, illustrates some of those points. While those around him considered him a genius, he knew better than to take credit for himself. His insights were in direct proportion with his ability to see beyond himself and to tune into a higher power.

Astrology of the New Moon
Let’s look at the chart of the new moon, cast for Miami, FL. The first thing I’m drawn to is the stellium, or grouping, of planets in Aquarius. Last month the new moon was in Aquarius and encouraged us to think collectively. With Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, and Neptune in Aquarius the emphasis is still about holding onto to our ideals, creating community, and finding original solutions to our problems. Yet with the new moon in Pisces we’re being asked to rely on our intuition, connect with God/spirit/source, and act compassionately in order to draw us closer to those goals.
The Sun and Moon only make one minor aspect, a sextile (60 degrees), to Pluto in Capricorn. Pluto is power and in Capricorn it demands accountability in social institutions, like government. And we’ve certainly seen this theme played out in the news lately. This sextile says to me that we as a society do have the opportunity (sextile) to heal (Pisces) the wounds created by our collective mismanagement of governmental institutions, particularly those related to physical resources like banking. On a personal level this new moon offers the spiritual blessings of having our daily work make us feel more connected to spirit.
Venus, planet of harmony and sociability, moved into Aries, sign of the warrior, earlier this month making us feel more driven to stay connected to our friends. Venus is also in a good aspect to Mars in Aquarius, opening a door of opportunity for us to courageously cooperate (Venus in Aries) with one another in aggressively co-creating our ideal world (Mars in Aquarius).
And of coures our old friends Saturn and Uranus are still at odds, having exactly opposed one another on February 5th for the second of five times. The recent peanut butter salmonila scare is a case where a food product was rushed (Uranus) to market without taking into account proper testing (Saturn), with disasterous results. Last week while buying my paper I mentioned to the cashier, an older woman, that the four pack was $4.99 but the twelve pack was just $6.99. Her response was, “you know things don’t make sense anymore.” And that’s Saturn/Uranus in a nutshell- the feeling that we’ve been cut loose from anything used to make sense.
This intense struggle between progress and tradition happens every forty years and gives us all the chance to check in with ourselves and see whether or not we’ve become too stagnant. The next time these two face off is on September 15 at 24 degrees of Virgo and Pisces, respectively. So hang in there and use this as an opportunity to examine outworn habits and structures. Are you really thriving or are you just barely getting along? If so, what can you do to unleash the power of your higher mind (Uranus)?
Putting it into Practice
For those of you who know your chart find 6 degrees of Pisces. Whatever house contains that degree is where you should welcome changes in your life. For example, I have 6 degrees of Pisces in my natal third house. I’ll want to focus my energy around third house concerns: communication, learning, and making connections. With Pisces there I may be writing about spiritual or metaphysical topics (which I do), communicating about compassion and imagination, or sharing this kind of information in my local neighborhood (which I will be doing through my new moon workshop).
