How Does Astrology Work?

When I tell folks that I’m an astrologer the first thing they usually do is tell me their Sun sign and ask me what it means. The second most popular question is “how does astrology work?” It’s a valid question and if you ask ten different astrologers you may get ten different answers. However, there are certain qualities of astrology that I think most would agree on. First, I think it’s important to look at astrology objectively. Do I know if Jupiter’s gravity is having an effect on your or me? No, I don’t. But what I do know, and what anyone can freely observe, is that Jupiter has a cycle- an orbit. We know how long it takes Jupiter to go around the Sun and we know how fast it moves. I also know that I experience personal cycles- whether in my careers, my moods, or my finances. Astrologers, through observation, have developed correlations between the cycles we can observe in the sky and the cycles we experience here on Earth.

Second, it’s important to remember that astrology is simply a language. I was listening to a podcast by Caroline Casey and she made the statement, “Astrology doesn’t determine our circumstances, it describes them.” Love It! We are each an agent of free will – that’s a fact. Do the planets or our understanding of them “make” us do or experience situations? I don’t believe they do. But astrology is wonderfully descriptive of what’s happening. When as astrologer tells you that Pluto (transformation) is transiting your seventh house (relationships) it’s best not to view it fatalistically, as in “Oh, my relationship is doomed!” but instead to view it descriptively- “Does that accurately describe my experience?” If it does then we can look at that cycle and see that, like all cycles, it will end and a new one will begin. If it doesn’t describe your current experience then ask what it may be describing.

Astrology, like most languages, has a vocabulary that includes many layers of meaning. While the seventh house generally means relationships, it can also mean someone with whom you’re in business, or a lawsuit. The seventh house is the “other” that we’re contractually or energetically connected to (or projecting onto).

The third point is a bit more subjective and is dependent on your world view. What’s a world view? It’s how you generally experience and accept the world (the world being situations, circumstances, people and your relationship to them). In my world view I believe we’re all connected. I believe we’re all energetic beings inhabiting a form (called a body) and, as part of a vast system that extends from atoms and quarks to planets and galaxies, we can know and gain knowledge from any part of that system. This has been my experience of how astrology works.

I  encourage you to find out for yourself how it works. Having a consultation can give you insight and understanding the cycles can inform your decisions through the richly descriptive nature of this unique language.
